Where does the data go when it is lost?

When you hear of these breaches that happen your first reaction is to think how inconvenient it is. But where does the data go really..... well Hold Security has found your data and another 1.25 billion emails and login credentials. It's not surprising to find the large block as there have been a boat load of breaches, it's a great wake up call to everyone that was involved in a breach to change your details ASAP.

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - Even my cab ride is not safe!!

I get in a smelly cab that I had to hail down while standing in this bone chilling weather, then I come to find out that when I paid someone stole my CC info. Is nothing safe anymore? BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - Cyber Liability Insurance or Encryption?

When I buy Insurance for my car it covers me for all types of accidents that I may have no control over. But when you buy Cyber Liability Insurance what are you really insuring? Your IT groups inability to secure your data - your lack of data security policies for your employees or maybe its both. We have compliance laws in place to safe guard companies that are doing the right thing, so just be compliant and when a breach happens you wont need to tell anyone and you wont loose 40% of you revenues like Target.

Gambling with your info - Casino Hack

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - You can't just sweep the Breach under the table

Just when you think the breach that happened to you 2 years ago is over and done with, it comes back to bite you. That is exactly with Kaiser is thinking right about now, if they had secured the data in the first they wouldn't have cared who had the hard drive and what they did with it.

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - New disease - Victim's Fatigue

NEW OUTBREAK!!  Victim's Fatigue
Symptoms of this over confident disease - Once the attack has happened the company begins to build its defenses to block other attackers coming in the same way. This is an effective defense and will stop other attacks from happening, BUT this is a relentless disease and will always come back.
What happens next is the down fall of most companies. They get over confident and start to drop their guards, they reduce the number of  employees that were in the defensive positions, and they find that they will be back in the same position all over again.

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - Hold merchants to the same standards as financial institutions

SHARE THE BLAME!!!
The Banks have there fair share of issues when it come to data security, but to look at all the recent breaches and blame the banks alone is a little naive. The data is first stored at a retailers database, if the retailer has no encryption in place to secure the data they have collected they should be held accountable. If the retailers do what they have been mandated to do and are PCI compliant then the blame can be passed on. I believe that where ever the data becomes un-encrypted and is breached is where the fines begin.

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - UK Government Lawyers Warned of Breaches

I find it strange that we hear about all these warnings the VA in the US and now Government Lawyers in the UK. It's like telling a burglar that I won't be home tonight and the kitchen window will be open, I also have all my cash in a bag under the sink.
Why bring attention to a vulnerability before it has been fixed, even if it is user error there is still a problem that can be exploited by hackers.
UK warning is here

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - Memphis Police Breached a Year Ago??

It takes a year for the Police department to notify an Undisclosed number of victims that they lost Drivers License numbers and Social Security numbers.
How does this happen? We are talking about a Police department that should be secure, clearly we need to look at how all of our cities departments are securing the data they gather.

The numbers are growing out of control but the companies are still willing to play Russians roulette with your sensitive medical documents.

BREAKING DATA NEWS ALERT - AMA Breaks down HIPAA Encryption

The AMA has done a very good job breaking down the HIPAA Encryption needs. It is a moving target so don't think that this is written in stone because the regs are changing all the time. But this is a great article and if you have any question about encryption this could help.
